Mandla Elliot Mthembu, the former husband of actress Khanyisile Mbau, has passed away at the age of 68 in New York, USA, his family confirmed.
The high life, designer labels, and expensive cars were hallmarks of Mbau and Mthembu’s relationship. He left South Africa, and started a new life in the US.
In a statement issued by the family on Monday, they said the 68-year-old Mthembu died on Sunday evening at a hospital in New York.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Mandla Elliot Mthembu, esteemed business mogul and long-standing member of the ANC.
“Mthembu was admitted to hospital, where he suffered a second stroke. Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to complications related to the stroke.
Throughout his life, Mthembu was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, his contributions to SA’s business landscape, and his commitment to the values of the ANC.
“His legacy will be remembered by many across the country,” read the statement.
The family has requested privacy “during this deeply painful time as they mourn the loss of a beloved father, brother, and friend “and said further details regarding memorial arrangements will be shared in due course.
Mthembu built his wealth after his printing company Sechaba Printing won a lawsuit against state-owned Transnet. Following the sale, Mthembu received a payout of around R57,650,554 after the court deducted 5% for contingencies.
Mthembu is survived by his children from multiple relationships. His daughter with Mbau, Khanukani, was born on December 24, 2006.
