ButtaNutt is recalling specific peanut and chocolate peanut butter products manufactured on January 15, 2026, due to elevated levels of Aflatoxin.
Aflatoxins are a group of carcinogenic moulds, usually found in poorly stored grains and nuts, but also in spices, cocoa beans and figs. They cannot easily be destroyed by high temperature as they are resistant to cooking, frying, baking, and roasting.
The recall affects ButtaNutt peanut and chocolate peanut butters manufactured on 15 January 2026 and expiring either on 13, 15, 17 or 28 July 2027.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced that it received a product recall notification from peanut butter manufacturer, ButtaNutt (Pty) Ltd.
Acting NCC Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu says customers can return the affected products to the place they bought it for a full refund.
“The NCC is engaging the supplier on the extent of the contamination, including potentially from the raw nuts supplier.”
The NCC is monitoring this recall in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).
Ratshisusu warned that consuming food contaminated with aflatoxin can cause symptoms such as nausea and stomach pain, and may be particularly dangerous for children and people with weakened immune systems.
“You might have bought these products if you’re in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, as well as the Western Cape province, as they were distributed through various retailers. If you have these products, do immediately stop consuming and take the product back to the point of purchase.” explained Ratshisusu.
