Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs played to a 0-0 draw in their DStv Premiership clash at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday evening.
City, fielding a makeshift line-up which featured debuts for 18-year-old midfielder Jaeden Rhodes and forward Mogamat May, showed signs of attacking promise in the opening quarter of the match.
Rhodes looked an eager and intelligent player on the ball, while May troubled the Chiefs defence with his movement.
The visitors generally fed off counter attacks, with the pace of Khama Billiat and the craft of Keagan Dolly giving them an outlet, though City goalkeeper Hugo Marques was not called upon to make any significant saves in the opening 45 minutes.
The closest either team came to a first-half goal was a 38th minute attack from the Citizens which saw May work space down the left of the penalty area before getting away a low shot/cross which was palmed away by goalkeeper Brandon Peterson.
City also had the first shot in anger in the second stanza, with Craig Martin shooting over the target with an effort direct from a free kick, while later moments for May and Terrence Mashego also kept the Amakhosi defence on its toes.
Chiefs first threat on goal after the restart arrived just after the hour mark, with a counter attack seeing Dolly whip a long-range shot just wide of the City ‘keeper’s left-hand post.
City introduced Khanyisa Mayo off the bench midway through the second half and the young attacker added an immediate edge to the hosts team’s forward play.
Yet the defences remained on top through to the final whistle, with the teams forced to settle for a goalless stalemate and a share of the spoils.
Meanwhile Royal AM claimed a slender 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United in their DStv Premiership match at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Tuesday evening.
Elsewhere Maritzburg United’s new signing Friday Samu produced a match winning performance to earn his side a valuable 2-1 victory over SuperSport United at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.
