Kaizer Chiefs and Richards Bay settled for a goal-laden 2-2 draw at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Kwamashu, Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) on Wednesday evening.
Chiefs struggled with the wet and slippery conditions and it was from it that they conceded the first goal that came after a howler from goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.
After just eight minutes, Thabo Moloisane passed back to Petersen and the Chiefs goalkeeper, who was not under pressure, failed to clear the ball before Nqaba Xulu took advantage and getting an easy tap in.
It was another error that will turn the spotlight on the Chiefs goalkeeper, who was the club’s most impressive player last season.
Chiefs took eight minutes to find the equaliser. A great counter attacking move that saw the Glamour Boys get into the Richards Bay box yielded a penalty after Mfundo Vilakazi was brought down.
Lebohang Maboe stepped up and slammed the ball past Richards Bay’s Kenyan goalkeeper Ian Otieno to make it 1-1.
Not holding back, the hosts retook the lead shortly before the break as the ball made its way into the box, Xulu found himself in the right area to guide home a header from close range.
Chiefs dominated territory and possession after the break, with the right flank providing plenty of joy, but they struggled to find an end product from a number of dangerous crosses into the box.
Siphesihle Ndlovu brought Chiefs back into the game in the 77th minute after linking with Asanele Velebayi going forward, with the latter providing an accurate cut back pass from the left wing before Ndlovu rifled the ball home into the top corner.
Despite two late attempts by Faiz Abrahams at Otieno in goal, Richards Bay managed to hold on as the two clubs settled for a point in KwaMashu.
