Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that they will not host Saturday’s encounter against Cape Town City following a Covid-19 outbreak at the club.
Earlier today,Chiefs confirmed that at least 31 employees tested positive for the coronavirus with training facilities being temporarily closed until next week.
Chiefs have written a letter to the PSL pleading with them to postpone their matches as some of their team members and staff have been infected by Covid-19.
“In the interim, the prevailing circumstances dictate that Kaizer Chiefs must sadly confirm that the Club will be unable to host the match against Cape Town City, scheduled for Saturday, 4 December at 18:00. At least 31 employees have tested positive for the virus and the Club has subsequently been obliged to instruct all players,members of the technical team and staff, who are deemed primary contacts, to quarantine as per official protocols,read a Chiefs statement.
Unfortunately, this is the only option available in the current situation and, as a responsible corporate citizen, Kaizer Chiefs upholds its duty to protect the lives of those around us – including others – and do our best to avoid an outbreak that might potentially affect the league and the country.
Meanwhile an urgent committee meeting had already been called regarding “other matters”, and Chiefs’ request for four DStv Premiership matches to be postponed given an outbreak,PSL acting CEO Mato Madlala said.
The other matches Chiefs have asked to be postponed are against Golden Arrows (December 8), Sekhukhune United (December 12) and Royal AM (December 22).
