The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) regional leader Moshe Mphahlele has been shot dead during protests in Bramley, Johannesburg on Sunday.

Fullview learnt Mphahlele was fatally caught in crossfire as the Joburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers tried to disperse protesters disputing the occupation of flats in Bramley on Sunday night, 4 August.

The residents condemned the use of live ammunition to try dispersing protesters.

“We want the law to take its course, because there was no need for them to use the force they used, they have rubber bullets and teargas, using a gun shows that the aim was to shoot to kill,” said one of the residents.

Margaret Arnolds, the Speaker of the City of Joburg, described Mphahlele as a committed public servant whose life was tragically cut short, leaving many shocked and deeply saddened.

She confirmed that the circumstances of Mphahlele’s untimely death were under investigation.

“It’s imperative that a thorough and transparent investigation is conducted to ensure that justice is served, and that the truth is brought to light,” Arnolds said.

She extended her deepest condolences to Mphahlele’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly challenging time.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this profound loss. Furthermore, the Speaker wishes to extend heartfelt sympathies and support to the EFF Caucus in the City of Johannesburg Council.

“Losing a colleague and a friend in such a manner is undoubtedly a profound and challenging experience. In these moments of grief, it’s crucial for all members of the council and the broader community to come together, uphold the values of justice, and work towards a peaceful and respectful resolution,” Arnolds said.

The EFF has extended its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mphahlele and wished those injured in the incident a speedy recovery.

“The organisation has deployed its structures to support the family of fighter Mphahlele and the community of Johannesburg, and Alexandra in particular. We call for calm and discipline among our members and the public as we seek justice.”

Action SA leader Herman Mashaba also conveyed his condolences to Mphahlele’s family.

JMPD spokesman Xolani Fihla said they cannot comment on this matter right now, as it is part of the SAPS investigation.

“The matter is being investigated by the SAPS, we as the JMPD do not have anything information about these issues, we will wait for the investigation to be completed,” he said.

In a separate incident, a section of Allandale Road in Klipfontein View has been barricaded off to traffic due to protest action in the area.

Residents blocked the road with burning tyres, rocks, and debris at the intersection of Saraseen and Kynoch Roads, with an additional closure on Nancy Ndamase Street from early on Monday morning.

Residents are protesting against prolonged water outages in the area.

Fihla says officers have been dispatched to assess the situation and assist with diverting vehicles from the affected areas.

“The closures are causing significant traffic disruptions between Midrand and Tembisa/Kempton Park in Ekurhuleni.

“Motorists should expect heavy delays as they navigate the area. We urge drivers to exercise caution and use alternative routes such as Modderfontein Road, Mastiff Road, and Dane Road to avoid the closures.”
