SA Police Services (SAPS) have confirmed that a 50-year-old woman and her 39-year-old partner have been arrested in connection with the murders of two young Soweto boys.
The youngsters, Nqobizitha Zulu and Tshiamo Rabanye, aged 5 and 6, were mutilated and their bodies found 1.4km apart in Rockville and White City by residents after a nearly 24-hour search last week.
The couple was arrested on Tuesday following a forensic investigation at the boys’ homes.
The mutilated bodies of Tshiamo Rabanye (6) and five-year-old Mduduzi Zulu were found a week ago, the morning after they went missing.
The bodies were discovered by community members who alerted the police.
Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says the team that was established by provincial police commissioner Elias Mawela took in the two suspects for questioning.
Although the police investigation is still continuing, Masondo confirmed that the woman is known to the families.
The couple is expected to appear before the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of murder.
ActionSA had offered a R50 000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those who killed two Soweto boys last week.
ActionSA leader Mashaba is a close family friend of the boys’ family spokesperson and visited the bereaved family on Saturday. He was joined by former City of Johannesburg police chief David Tembe and Gauteng chairperson Funzi Ngobeni.
Mashaba said the Zulu and Rabanye families both welcomed our offer for a reward to find the perpetrators responsible for these senseless killings and asked that [Tembe] be the liaison between the police and the families during the investigation.
