One of the five men accused of killing soccer star Senzo Meyiwa refused medical treatment even after making claims that he was assaulted by police.
This was revealed by Sergeant Bathobakae Mogola when testifying in a trial-within-a-trial in the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, on Thursday.
The court has been hearing testimony during a trial within a trial to determine the admissibility of alleged confession statements by two of the men accused of the football star’s murder.
She said the lead investigator, Brigadier Bongani Gininda, told her to take the accused to a medical facility where he would be examined.
When she tried to take Sibiya for the medical examination, he refused and didn’t give an explanation.
“My lord, he didn’t want to do the medical examination, and I told Brigadier Gininda, and he suggested that I check the occurrence book where he was held at the time. When I checked, there was nothing on, and officers at the police station also didn’t have any information on his assault claims,” Mogola said.
Mogola concluded her testimony after almost a week on the stand.
The court has also heard new evidence pertaining to the vehicle movements of police officers who transported accused 2, around the time the accused allege they were tortured into making confessions.
Following the conclusion of Mogola, vehicle tracking expert Michael Du Preez returned to the stand with a report mapping the movements of Sergeant Vusumuzi Mogane’s vehicle between 31 May and 22 June 2020.
Du Preez’s report has revealed that on the day Bongani Ntanzi claims he was tortured before signing a confession statement at the Moroka Police Station, Mogane’s car could have stopped at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
This would be in line with Ntanzi’s version that the police stopped here to meet Colonel Mohale Raphadu – the officer who later took down the alleged confession in Moroka.
Du Preez will be back on the witness stand on Friday morning to conclude presenting his report before the defense starts his cross-examination.
Meyiwa was killed while visiting his singer girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, at her home in Vosloorus on October 26, 2014.
The five accused of his murder are Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphisa, and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli.
