Cape Town City FC began the new season on the positive note, beating Sekhukhune United 1-0 in the MTN8 quarter-final tie at New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Both City and United started the game cautiously, avoiding to conceding an early goal.

The Citizens had a good chance to take a lead in the 40th minute when they were awarded a penalty, however, Darwin Gonzalez’s effort came off the crossbar.

When it seemed the game would be decided in maybe the extra time, or post-match penalties, City got their second penalty in the 88th minute when the Babina Noko defender handled the ball in the danger zone.

Gonzalez rose for the occasion once again, but this time around he managed to find the back of the net to help his team win 1-0 into the semi-final.

City join fellow Cape Town side Stellenbosch FC in the last four. Stellies were the first side to join the defending champions Orlando Pirates in the semifinals after beating TS Galaxy last Sunday.
