Ekurhuleni Mayor Xhakaza has denied the allegations implicating him in the murder of Bongani Mfihlo and chief auditor Mpho Mafole, assuring the public of a thorough probe.
According to a report, Xhakaza spent the night in the company of Mfihlo when security guards linked to the municipality shot and killed him in September 2023 at a nightclub.
Almost two years later, one of the guards was arrested for the murder of Mafole.
Xhakaza’s presence at the first crime scene was hidden until the police’s Serious and Violent Crimes Unit took over the investigation in July 2025.
His office in a statement, said Xhakaza viewed recent media reports, as “unsubstantiated attempts to tarnish his reputation and delegitimise his leadership authority.”
The statement emphasised that while the mayor supports freedom of expression, he urges the media to adhere to the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and integrity.
“The Executive Mayor has consistently called for justice for the late Mpho Mafole and for all victims of violent crime in the municipality. He continues to respect the authority of the South African Police Service and is consulting with legal representatives to explore all available remedies, including civil action for defamation,” read the statement.
Xhakaza’s office maintains that criminal matters must run their course without interference and that the municipality is committed to upholding the rule of law, transparency, and accountability.
He was the MMC for group corporate and shared services at the time of the death of Mfihlo.

Meanwhile the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni demands police to speed up investigations into Xhakaza’s possible involvement in Mfihlo’s murder.
“The fact that its first citizen is embroiled in numerous scandals should be of concern to everyone who calls Ekurhuleni home.
“The DA will not rest until the truth sees the light of day and that there is justice for those who are victims of this gangster city,” said the DA’s Brandon Pretorius.
Pretorius said the DA also wants access to the report of contract of toilet that Mafole handed over to the municipality before his death.
“We will continue to push for the release of Mafole’s report while keeping a close eye on the investigation into the shooting of Mfihlo.”
Xhakaza, an ANC deployee and Ekurhuleni regional task team member, now holds the seat as first citizen of the city. He served as a former MMC for group corporate and shared services under the axed Sivuyile Ngodwana. He is also a former finance & economic development MMC under former ANC mayor Mzwandile Masina.
