The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Sedibeng welcomes the council resolution, to request the suspension of Sedibeng Mayor, Lerato Maloka, pending a full disciplinary investigation into her misdeeds.
The request was sent to Gauteng MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Jacob Mamabolo.
Fullview understands the council found that Maloka has been negligent in her mayoral duties.
In a statement, the party said, “The council send a recommendation through to the MEC to have the mayor suspended.”
Maloka is accused of wasting over R500 000.00 on a trip to Germany. Her role in the destruction of the Mayoral vehicle after sugar was found in the engine of the car.
While the council meeting was in session, Maloka held a media biefing and detailed a series of governance failures perpetuated by the current municipal manager, Motsumi Mathe, and other senior officials.
These include irregular staff promotions, concealment of financial irregularities, and failure to recover funds improperly paid to legal firms. Maloka claimed that the administration’s focus has shifted from community needs to internal power struggles and self-interest.
Among the most allegations, Maloka accuses the municipal manager and Speaker of Council, Moipone Modikeng, of manipulating council minutes, obstructing disciplinary action, and misleading council and the public.
Mamabolo is yet to respond to the council request to suspend the mayor.
In 2023, the African National Congress (ANC) also recalled Maloka as its mayoral deployee in Sedibeng — though she continued in office under contentious circumstances.
