Defence lawyer in the Senzo Meyiwa trial Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu has passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, 10th of December.
Mngomezulu’s family confirmed his death.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and son. We confirm his untimely passing in the early hours of the 10th [of] December 2024 at Vosloorus, [at] Thelle Mogoerane hospital,” read the statement from family member Dumisile Mngomezulu.
The family has since asked for space and privacy to mourn him. “In this time of grief, we ask for your compassion, space and time to congregate as a family to decide on the [way forward] in the upcoming days. We thank you for the love and support in advance and ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers.”
Mngomezulu represented Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, who is among the five men accused of killing the late Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain.
The last time Mngomezulu was in court was on 22 October, and he was wearing a face mask. He also had a fan next to him to help him feel better on the day.
He was due to start cross examining lead investigating officer, Bongani Gininda. In November, he told the court that he was not in a position to cross examine Gininda and told the court that Advocate Zithulele Nxumalo will do his cross examination.
Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Fisokuhle Ntuli are standing trial for the murder of the late football star.
They have all pleaded not guilty to all charges.
They face charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicenced firearm, and possession of ammunition.
