Diesel price to drop, petrol little changed after levy cut.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has published the official fuel price adjustments that will take effect on Wednesday, 4 November 2026.

Petrol prices will be cut by 1 cent per litre for 93 and 95, and diesel will be cut by R1.10 and R1.20 per litre for 0.05% and 0.005%, respectively.

Last month was another strained month for fuel recoveries, with climbing global oil prices exacerbated by a much weaker rand versus the dollar.

Recoveries were deep in the red throughout the month, putting motorists in line for another hefty price hike at the pumps for November.

However, following calls from various sectors for intervention, the National Treasury announced an R10 billion relief package, effective from 4 November.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced in October that the government would re-implement a temporary relief measure to reduce the impact of the fuel price hikes.

This will see the general fuel levy temporarily cut for the second time this year by R1.50 per litre for petrol and R3.00 per litre for diesel.

However, the increase in the slate levy has largely undone any benefit from the late-month turn in petrol recoveries, effectively balancing out the relief from Treasury.

The DMPR noted that the average international product prices of petrol and diesel increased during the period under review.

It explained that these prices are being driven higher by unusually high demand in the Northern Hemisphere and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.  This is despite efforts from the G7 to release some reserve stockpiles of fuel and the waiving of some sanctions on Russia by the United States.
