Durban City had to dig deep for a win over Chippa United on penalties following a draw in regulation time in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 match at the Chatsworth Stadium on Friday night.

City became the fourth team to progress to the round of 16 after Stellenbosch FC, Mamelodi Sundowns and Vasco Da Gama.

With nothing to differentiate the teams in both regulation and extra time, the game had to be decided by penalties, and the Citizens claimed a 3-2 win to advance.

City’s best chance in the first half fell for an unmarked Terrence Mashego from close. However, the Mamelodi Sundowns loanee’s header was superbly saved by keeper Dumisani Msibi, and the score was 0-0 during the half-time break, thanks to some brilliant goalkeeping.

The second half saw City create the better chances, but Msibi made some fine saves to deny Letsie Koapeng, Sphiwe Mahlangu, and Saziso Magawana. The 30-year-old ensured that the game ended in a 0-0 draw in regulation time, and extra time followed.

Meanwhile Vasco Da Gama made it to the Round of 16 of the Nedbank Cup following their 4-1 win against Luthuli Brigades at the Athlone Stadium on Friday night.
