The Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) is accusing acting police minister Firoz Cachalia of undue interference in the South African Police Services (SAPS) political killings investigations.
This comes after Cachalia slammed National Commissioner Fannie Masemola’s decision to move 121 dockets on political killings before SAPS inquiry commences its work.
Masemola has issued a directive that the case files that were seized will be returned to the KZN Political Killings Task Team.
According to KZN comissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the dockets that were under investigation were taken away from the political killings task team by the Deputy Police Commissioner for crime detection, Shadrack Sibiya.
The claims led to Sibiya being suspended pending the outcome of the police commission of inquiry by retired Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.
Mkhwanazi said, 121 dockets were taken away from the KZN political killings task team due to interference by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Sibiya.
In a statement on Saturday, the party said Cachalia’s remarks about the 121 police dockets that are to be returned to the political killings task team undermined the work of the SA Police Service (SAPS).
“These dockets relate to some of the most serious crimes in our democracy: politically motivated murders, attempted murders and intimidation cases that have terrorised communities across KwaZulu-Natal,” the statement said.
