SA Police Services (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal have launched a manhunt for an unknown number of suspects who shot and killed eight people at Zama informal settlement at U Section in Umlazi, Durban, on Friday evening.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said at the scene, eight people, six men and two women, whose ages range between 22 and 40 years old, were found lying lifeless with multiple gunshot wounds.
“It is reported that the victims were inside the dwelling when an unknown number of suspects entered and opened fire, killing them at the scene.”
“Investigations into the possible motive of the killings are underway and police have launched a manhunt for the suspects,” said Netshiunda.
On Saturday morning, KZN Premier Thami Ntuli, joined by the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, will visit the scene of the mass murder.
“The visit comes as part of urgent efforts by the provincial government and law enforcement agencies to respond to the increasing levels of violent crime and ensure that justice is swiftly served.
“Premier Ntuli will receive a full briefing on the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess the immediate interventions being undertaken by the South African Police Service,” said the Premier’s office in a statement.
