The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed the death of Mpho Mafole following a fatal shooting last night, June 30, in Kempton Park.
Mafole was shot dead by unknown suspects on Monday, while driving on the R23 in Esselen Park.
The motive for the shooting is unknown.
Mafole served as the group divisional head of corporate and group forensic audits for the city.
In an internal letter to staff, the city’s head of communications, Phakamile Mbengashe, pledged that the municipality would do “everything within its power to assist the ongoing investigation”.
Mbengashe said all necessary security protocols remain in place, and additional support will be made available to staff who may need it.
“We understand that this news may cause concern among staff. We wish to assure you that the city is committed to ensuring a safe and secure working environment for all employees.
“We encourage all staff to remain vigilant, support one another, and report any suspicious activity to your line manager or the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department.”
Before being appointed to Ekurhuleni, Mafole served as Investigations Manager at the Auditor General of South Africa.
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said no arrests have been made.
“On 30 June 2025 at about 17:55, the police attended to a shooting incident where they found the victim lying in his car with gun shot wounds. The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage and police investigations continue.”
