Johannesburg’s DP World Wanderers Stadium roared into life on Friday as the 360 Padel | Gayle South African Invitational served up a spectacular opening day, showcasing the biggest names in the sport and setting the stage for a thrilling weekend of action.

The three-day tournament, running from 15 to 17 August, has drawn an elite line-up including world number ones Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, Spanish aces Juan Lebrón and Ale Galán, Argentine icons Fernando “Bela” Belasteguín and Franco Stupaczuk, and a host of international stars. South Africa’s top 24 players are also in action, competing for their own prize pool in a curtain-raiser to the global showdown.

Day One: Legends, Rivalries, and Relentless Action

The afternoon began with a mouth-watering clash as world number one, Coello teamed up with the legendary Belasteguín, returning from retirement for this event, to face Miguel Yanguas and Momo González. The packed crowd witnessed a masterclass, with Coello and Bela edging a nail-biting first set in a tiebreak before closing out the match 7–6, 6–3.

Match two proved more one-sided, as Argentina’s Stupaczuk and Spain’s Francisco Guerrero overpowered Tapia and Jon Sanz 6–3, 6–4.

In the night’s finale, Galán partnered Pablo Cardona for the first time , a pairing that clicked instantly. The Spaniards dismantled Lebrón and Leo Augsburger 6–2, 6–1 under the Bullring’s bright lights.

The results leave Team Los Galácticos with a commanding early lead over Team Los Grandes, having won all three matches to collect three points. With 18 points available across the tournament, the stakes will rise sharply as the scoring system shifts: one point per win on Friday, two on Saturday, and three on Sunday.

Saturday’s Showdowns: Must-Win Territory for Los Grandes

Day two will test Los Grandes’ resolve, with the team needing at least two victories to keep the contest alive. The action begins with Cardona and Belasteguín taking on the Spanish duo of José Diestro and González, followed by Galán and Guerrero against Augsburger and Yanguas. The headline encounter at 19:00 will see Coello and Stupaczuk face the formidable Argentine pairing of Tapia and Martín Di Nenno.

With the Springboks also in action against the Wallabies just seven kilometers away, Johannesburg will be buzzing with sporting energy. The atmosphere at the Wanderers is expected to be even more electric as fans flock to witness world-class padel at its highest level.

“This isn’t just a tournament, it’s a celebration of padel’s arrival on the African main stage,” said event spokesperson Sarfraz Bismilla. “We’re bringing the world’s biggest names to one of the most iconic venues in the country and giving local fans an unforgettable experience.”

“We want to put South Africa on the map globally. We want South Africa to be taken seriously as an international paddle destination, having recently attended the world pedal summit in Barcelona, and looking at the growth of other countries, you know, the UK, the US, our market seems more enthusiastic than those markets, and they seem to have more of the limelight” said Mohammed Majan from 360 PaddleSA.

“We have over 1000 courts across the country, we have over 250,000 players registered on the Playtomic app in South Africa, of which around 80,000 are considered to be active players, meaning they play at least one to two games a week” said Majan.

This could create a new wave of excitement on the continent and give spectators a chance to witness world class padel. Tickets remain available through Ticketpro, but numbers are limited. For those who want to witness history and see the sport’s superstars in full flow, the time to secure a seat is now.
