The Department of Health in Free State has confirmed that a fire broke out at the National District Hospital in Bloemfontein on Sunday 7 July.
The department’s spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi said, the cause of fire is still unknown and the extent of the damage is not yet known.
Mvambi said, the fire originated outside the Paediatric ward, set trees alight, and spread to the first and second floor of the hospital.
The Mangaung Metro Fire and Rescue Services, alongside several state and private emergency medical services, responded promptly to assist in the evacuation process.
There were 83 patients in the hospital at the time of the fire, “23 were transferred to Botshabelo District Hospital, while the remaining were temporarily moved to Gateway Clinic,” Mvambi explains.
“No one died or got injured as a result of this fire. All persons inside the hospital were accounted for,” Mvambi added.
“This coordinated effort ensured that evacuation procedures were carried out efficiently and effectively, minimising any potential risk to patients and staff.”

The Free State Premier, MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, expressed their gratitude to everyone who ensured that work was done co-operatively, as well as those who ensured the safety and care of patients.
