The City of Tshwane Emergency Services has confirmed a blaze that broke out at Jubilee Shopping Mall in Hammanskraal, North of Pretoria on Monday.
Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said the emergency call centre received the call just after 11 am.
“Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters found an Ackermans store was on fire and immediately started with firefighting operations. They also protected the PEP store from possible fire spread. The fire was contained and subsequently extinguished.
Firefighters then started with extinguishing spot fires, by removing the burnt fire load and ventilation, to rid the building of excess smoke.
“No one was injured as a result of the blaze. The extent of the damages has not yet been quantified,” Mabaso said.
Mabaso added that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Gauteng has been the scene of several fires following the deadly Marshalltown fire which claimed the lives of 77 people in late August; and another in September that left hundreds homeless.
The Commission of Inquiry reviewing the tragedy was established by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi to look into the fire that killed 77 people and injured 88 others last August.
Khampepe recommended that the accounting officers of the city of Joburg’s entities, the JPC, Johannesburg Water, City Power, and PikiTup, be subjected to disciplinary processes where there is evidence of the contraventions of their duties, which, if they had been performed, would have avoided the Usindiso tragedy.
