Department of Health in Gauteng has confirmed fire in a psychiatric ward in Bertha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston in the East Rand on Friday afternoon.
Fullview understands a mental health patient caused by throwing a matchstick onto a blanket in his seclusion room after lighting a cigarette.
Department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said no injuries were reported.
“The patient lit a cigarette and subsequently threw a matchstick onto a blanket in his seclusion room, which unfortunately resulted in a smouldering smoke and a small fire.”
He says the room has been cleaned and inspected.
“The male patient involved in the incident, has been transferred to a seclusion room in another ward for the continuation of his treatment.”
