Firefighters from the City of Ekurhuleni are struggling to contain a blaze that erupted at the Simmer and Jack landfill site in Germiston.
The fire has been raging since Thursday afternoon – emitting thick carbon smoke into the Germiston area.
Emergency services in Ekurhuleni Spokesperson William Ntladi warned the fire was emitting a lot of carbon smoke.
“We are pleading with motorists and everyone who is using that area to be on high alert when approaching the area, as the smoke can minimise vision, which can lead to fatal crashes. The firefighters have been battling the blaze since Thursday.”
Ntladi said firefighters expect the blaze to last for several days.
South Africa has seen other devastating fires across the country in the recent months.
