Five people die in car accident near Adelaide in the Eastern Cape.

Five people have died after the driver lost control of the vehicle they were travelling in overturned on the R63 road at Bedford near Adelaide in the Eastern Cape.

Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the accident took place on Saturday night at around 22:20.

Binqose said the vehicle, a Renault Sandero, was travelling towards Adelaide with seven occupants,  when it overturned.

He said four people were declared dead on the scene, while another one died on arrival at Bedford Hospital.

The deceased include a seven-year-old girl, Binqose said in a statement.

Two females, who sustained severe injuries, were taken to hospital for further medical care.

Binqose said while the main cause of the accident was being investigated, it appeared that the driver lost control of the vehicle.

A case of culpable homicide docket was opened at Bedford SAPS for further investigation.
