Five people have been injured in a collision between a security van and a bakkie on Ravel Street in Vanderbijlpark on Saturday.
ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene along with SAPS at 09:29 to find the driver of the bakkie, a 24-year-old man, lying in the road.
Two children of 3 or 4 years of age had been removed from the vehicle and were in the arms of onlookers.
The man had suffered critical injuries and required Advanced Life Support interventions to stabilise his condition.
He was flown by another private service’s medical helicopter to a private hospital for further emergency care.
The two children, a boy and a girl, had suffered serious injuries and also required ALS care before being transported to Mediclinic Emfuleni for further treatment.
Two security guards from the van were found to have suffered minor injuries and were also treated and transported to hospital by another service on the scene.
In a separate crash,three people were killed in a head-on collision between two cars in Potchefstroom on Saturday afternoon.
“Both male drivers were found to have suffered fatal injuries and were both declared dead on arrival. The front passenger of the Polo was found entrapped in the wreckage and the Fire Department used the jaws of life to extract him. A 28-year-old woman who was also injured has since lost her life bringing the death toll to three.
“Two male occupants were found in the back of the Polo with serious injuries. All the male patients are believed to be in their 30s, they were transported to the hospital for further care,”said ER24.
Since the start of the festive season, 14 people were killed in a taxi crash in Free State on Saturday morning while nine were killed in Mpumalanga on Friday.
