At least five people have died and several others injured in a tragic accident along the N3, just after Mariannhill Toll Plaza, Kwazulu-Natal (KZN).
The crash occurred just after 5:00 PM, saw a taxi collide with another vehicle before losing control and plunging down a steep embankment.
Fullview learnt that the taxi was trying to avoid reckless Polo driver, who may have contributed to the taxi’s losing of control.
The vehicle fell approximately 50 to 70 meters down a cliff, resulting in catastrophic damage. Emergency services, including ALS paramedics, responded swiftly to the scene.
“We can confirm that five people have tragically lost their lives in this incident. A further 13 individuals have sustained various injuries,” said, Garrith Jamieson spokesperson for ALS paramedics.
The injured passengers, some in serious condition, were rushed to hospitals around Durban for urgent medical treatment.
The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Meanwhile road users are advised to plan for alternative routes during the Durban July, as several road closures will be in effect from late Friday until the conclusion of the horse-racing event on Saturday.
Main thoroughfares affected will include DLI Avenue, Avondale, and Gladys Manzibuko. Residents should be prepared for modifications to their routes, with closures on Haden and Avondale Roads, along with additional disruptions on Mitchell Crescent, 5th and 6th Avenues, and Clarence Road.
With the anticipated influx of visitors, it is crucial for the public to stay informed and remain flexible in their travel plans to avoid delays.
