Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has officially extended his contract with the club until 2029, the Spanish giants made the announcement on Wednesday.
De Jong (28) joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 and is in his seventh season with the Catalan giants, winning two LaLiga titles and the Copa del Rey twice.
“Barca are confident that the midfielder can be a pivotal part of the current sporting project due to his quality and experience,” said the club in a statement.
The midfielder’s new deal also includes a €500 million release clause — €100 million higher than his previous one — symbolizing the club’s unwavering confidence in his importance to the project.
De Jong expressed his delight at continuing his journey with Barcelona, calling it the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. He said: “As I’ve always said, since I was a child, I dreamed of playing for Barcelona — and now that I’m living this dream, I want to stay here as long as possible and win many titles with this club.”
He added: “I haven’t yet won the Champions League with Barcelona, and this is a big goal for me and the team. We also want to win all possible titles — more league championships, cups, and the Super Cup. We will try to achieve that.”
The signing took place at the Spotify Camp Nou offices, with president Joan Laporta, vice president Rafael Yuste, and sporting director Deco present alongside the player.
