The highly anticipated 2022 Durban Handicap is back again this year after two years of hosting “Africa’s greatest horse racing event” behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year’s theme is ‘Show Me The Honey’ and the fashionistas are making their way in batches to the highly-anticipated social event of the year.

Hats and feathers seem to be a common theme so far, with some outfits screaming drama.

The weather is looking great, promising a great day filled with horse racing action as well as high fashion.

Marquees are adding the finishing touches to their set up and it is evident that no expense was spared. Each marquee offers a different VIP experience for guests.

Famous faces like Minnie Dlamini, Anele Mdoda, Dj Tira, Nomzamo Mbatha, Donovan Goliath, Ayanda Thabethe have already made a grand appearance.

And more are expected to arrive in true celeb style – fashionably late, of course.

The timeous lifting of lockdown regulations is a welcome relief for event organisers and Durban tourism. The eThekwini tourism region is expecting a significant boost to the economy, hosting a number of satellite events to coincide with the central horse racing event.

Performing on the main stage are Blxckie, Nomfundo Moh, DJ Vuma, Dladla Mshunqisi and many more. July fever is in full swing as race goers enjoy the VIP marquee experience provided by Fact Durban Rocks, Boomtown, Pegasus Lounge and many other companies.

Speaking to the media during the week, eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said the city is excited about the anticipated economic spinoff of the event, with attendants expected to spend up to R145 million and economic activity projected at R362 million.

“An estimated 740 people within the tourism and hospitality as well as related value chains will get employment because of this event,” Kaunda added.

Kaunda said the event will be extended to five satellite venues, which will retain online betting, fashion and entertainment elements, due to ticket sale restrictions at the main venue.

Meanwhile, eThekwini Municipality said experts in the sector predict that over one million tourists will visit Durban during winter and spend approximately R1.45 billion, contributing R3.6 billion to the GDP.
