Heavy rain causes flash flooding in some parts of Gauteng.

A number of roads in Gauteng were reported as flooded or with a large amount of standing water on Friday afternoon following a thunderstorm.

The South African Weather Service (Saws)’s weather forecast for Friday had predicted scattered showers and thundershowers.

The heavy rain caused flooding on the N3 Highway in the Bedfordview and Germiston areas, where a car accident subsequently occurred, according to Traffic SA.

Busy traffic conditions were experienced on the N3 Toll Route this week, with highs of between 1000 and 1900 vehicles per hour travelling towards Gauteng.

N3 Operations Manager Thania Dhoogra said traffic authorities may implement safety precautions to control traffic.

“Road users should especially be prepared for high northbound traffic volumes, including possible congestion and delays, on Sunday, 7 January, between 09:00 and 18:00 and are reminded that should it be necessary, traffic authorities may implement safety precautions such as traffic calming measures at strategic locations along the route.”

Dhoogra said motorists should be wary of adverse weather conditions at this time of year, as parts of the N3 are prone to severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and often hail.

“Stay alert and informed of traffic and weather conditions along your route. Allow extra travel time to patiently and carefully negotiate difficult situations, should they arise.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the EMS received reports of flooding in the Maboneng and Alexandra areas, but no injuries or fatalities were reported.

He added that the EMS also received a report of a vehicle that was trapped in the floods in Juksei, but the EMS managed to rescue the occupants of the vehicle.
