A fire in Voëlklip, Hermanus has been contained, while firefighters in the Garden Route Municipality are battling three other wildfires.
The Voëlklip fire, which spanned an area along 17th Avenue, between 2nd and 4th Street in Voëlklip, started at about 01:30 on Sunday.
According to Overstrand executive mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, the fire, which burned towards the mountain and Stanford, was contained at about 06:00.
No injuries were reported. “It is unclear who started the fire at this stage,” said Rabie.
Rabie told News24 that teams are still in the area for possible flare-ups.
Residents with sprinklers or hoses were advised to use them to keep their gardens wet.
Meanwhile, firefighters are still battling three more fires in the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM).
The Buffelsdrift fire on the N9, George Municipal Area, and the Jongensfontein fire (Hessequa Municipal Area) are still active.
Also, there are still signs of fire activity after clouds cleared in the Swartberg Pass (De Kombuys and the Koos Raubenheimer Dam), Oudtshoorn Municipal Area, which consists of two flanks (west and east).
“I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to all firefighters who tackle fires in our district with courage and dedication, moving tirelessly from one fire to the next,” GRDM Executive Mayor Andrew Stroebel said.
“My gratitude also extends to the pilots of helicopters and bombers, whose support is invaluable in our firefighting efforts. It is important to clarify that this aerial support will continue to be coordinated by the Garden Route District Municipality.”
