Five people were killed in a motor vehicle accident in Eddie Hagen Drive, Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Fullview understands that the driver lost control and rammed the vehicle into a concrete drain on the side of the road, splitting the car in half.
ALS Paramedics Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they responded to a single-vehicle collision in Eddie Hagen Drive.
Reports are that a family of six were transporting a critically injured patient who had been assaulted and stabbed to the local clinic when they lost control and left the roadway before colliding with a concrete drain,” Jamieson said.
Jamieson added that paramedics responded to this horrific collision just before 6am this morning and found emergency personnel already in attendance.
“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find total carnage. They found that the vehicle has basically split in half. They assessed the scene and found that all six male patients had sustained major injuries. Paramedics worked on two patients on the scene, however, one went into a state of cardiac arrest and was declared deceased on the scene.”
One patient with critical injuries was rushed to a nearby hospital for the urgent care that he required. A total of five have been confirmed deceased on the scene,” Jamieson said.
Meanwhile, N3TC and its road incident management system (RIMS) partners are ready for an expected increase in southbound traffic volumes (towards KZN.
People from across Gauteng and other provinces are expected to travel to the coast during the long weekend.
N3TC chief operating officer Thania Dhoogra said conditions along the route are currently cloudy, and traffic is flowing freely.
