The case against rapper and TV personality Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye has been postponed to December.
Jub Jub appeared briefly at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
He faces 13 charges, including rape, attempted murder, assault and kidnapping.
Initially, Jub Jub’s legal representative requested that the case be provisionally remanded to 11 December to further sort out certain particulars.
Magistrate Khumalo accepted this date. “You are warned to be back at court on 11 December at 8.30am. It is still a provisional remand, because there are further particulars being sort out by your legal representative. And the state still needs more time to consult with the witnesses,” she said.
So now, I am of the view that – and I don’t want any excuses from both parties that on the next court date – a trial date has to be set. The investigation on this matter has already been concluded so there is no point in wasting time,” she said.
It was at this point Jub Jub asked to speak to his legal representative, who then in turn explained to Khumalo that his client would be on tour for the whole of December.
“Then why did you propose that date?” an angry Magistrate Khumalo asked. Saying that the tour was not a life or death situation, she ruled that the case would still proceed on the date it was set.
Magistrate Khumalo discussed the next court appearance, stating that if he is not present, a warrant for his arrest will be issued.
“If your client is not available (on December 11), a warrant of arrest will be authorised,” said magistrate Khumalo.
Jub Jub was charged in July this year. The offences were reported to have occurred between 2006 and 2010, but the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) revealed that the initial complaint was not lodged until 2022, with the complainant saying she was initially denied assistance by the police.
The NPA’s Phindi Mjonondwane said in July that there were four complainants associated with the matter dating from 2006 to 2010.
Jub Jub was ordered to hand in his travelling documents to the investigating officer and he is also not permitted to make contact with any witnesses of the State.
“He is also not allowed to make contact directly or indirectly with any witnesses of the State. There are four complainants in this case dating back to 2006, so the alleged offences were committed from 2006 going onwards to 2010, “said Mjonondwane.
This is not the first time Jub Jub has been the subject of allegations of abuse. In 2021, well-known actress Amanda Du Pont came forward to say that she spent two years in a relationship with the Uyajola 9/9 host, claiming he subjected her to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
Television and radio host Masechaba Khumalo also shared her alleged rape experience.
