Debutant Kyle Mayers scored a stunning 210 not out as West Indies secured the fifth highest run chase in Test history against Bangladesh in Chittagong.
The Windies chased down 395 to win by three wickets, with 15 balls remaining in the final hour of the first Test.
Mayers also shared an outstanding fourth-wicket stand of 216 with fellow Test debutant Nkrumah Bonner.
Bonner fell lbw for 86, but Mayers played with aggression and fluency to see his side home.
The list of records Mayers broke with his unbeaten 210 was lengthy:
— The first batsman to hit a double hundred in the second innings of his debut Test (previous best was 176 George Headley against England in 1930)
— The second-highest score in a successful fourth-innings Test chase (best remains Gordon Greenidge against Engand in 1984)
— The second-highest score by a West Indian debutant and the 14th West Indian batsman to score a Test century on debut
— The second-most sixes in an innings on Test debut (best remains Tim Southee against England in 2008)
— The fifth-highest score by a debutant in Test history
— The sixth batsman to score a Test double century on debut
— The sixth batsman to score a Test double century in a fourth innings.
It’s not as if Mayers had been banging down the Test selection door for years either. He’d only played 32 First Class matches since debuting in 2015, with just 1418 runs and two centuries to his name.
The second Test of the two-match series starts in Dhaka on February 11.
