KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority (KZNTAFA), through its Durban KZN Convention Bureau, will participate in Meetings Africa 2026 from 23–25 February 2026 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

Hosted by South African Tourism under the National Convention Bureau, Meetings Africa is Africa’s leading business events trade platform, connecting destinations with pre-qualified international hosted buyers, association planners and corporate decision-makers

“This is a disciplined commercial engagement,” said Sibusiso Gumbi, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority. “Meetings Africa is where destinations compete for high-yield events. We are participating with defined targets – expand pipeline, secure confirmed business and grow KwaZulu-Natal’s share of the national MICE market.”

KwaZulu-Natal will occupy a 72m² stand representing a coordinated provincial business events ecosystem. Industry stakeholders, hosted buyers, investors and media are invited to engage with the provincial delegation at Stand H28 within the South African Tourism national pavilion.

Strategic Stakeholder Engagement and Institutional Alignment

KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film in partnership with the Durban International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) will also host a structured stakeholder session at Meetings Africa in Sandton. The platform will convene hosted buyers, and provincial trade stakeholders in a focused commercial setting to reintroduce Durban KZN as a strong contender in business tourism.

“Business events are secured through alignment and confidence,” Gumbi said. “Our collaboration with the Durban ICC and our provincial trade partners demonstrates a unified MICE ecosystem. Buyers engage with leadership, venue operators and destination authorities in one coordinated environment. That strengthens procurement certainty.”

He added: “This engagement platform is structured to convert. It moves discussions beyond exploration and into commercial commitment.”

Confirmed Provincial Revenue Position and 2028 Target

KwaZulu-Natal’s tourism sector generated R 21.8 billion in total for international and domestic tourism revenue in 2025, reinforcing its status as one of South Africa’s leading tourism economies.

The KZN Tourism & Film’s strategy for 2026–2028 seeks to increase the proportional contribution of business events within that revenue base.  Business events generate higher per-delegate spend, longer booking horizons and greater supply-chain impact than traditional leisure segments.

“Our objective is to increase the business events contribution within our overall tourism revenue mix by 2028,” Gumbi said. “We are strengthening targeted bidding, expanding international buyer engagement and positioning KwaZulu-Natal as a competitive host for continental and global congresses.”

Investor and Association Call

KwaZulu-Natal’s participation at Meetings Africa 2026 represents an estimated provincial investment of R1.52 million, structured around measurable return and long-term pipeline growth.

“We invite international associations, corporate planners and sector investors to engage directly with KwaZulu-Natal,” Makwakwa concluded. “Our province offers stability, infrastructure strength and institutional alignment. Between 2026 and 2028, we are expanding our business events portfolio with intent and discipline. We are competing for high-value events that strengthen our economy and deliver shared growth.”

Three-Year Bid Pipeline Expansion

Between 2026 and 2028, the KwaZulu-Natal Convention Bureau is targeting a structured bid pipeline through confirmed and prospective international and national events.

“This is not speculative positioning,” Gumbi said. “We are building a measurable three-year bid pipeline with clear sector priorities. Every engagement at Meetings Africa feeds into that forward pipeline. Our focus is sustained growth. We are targeting association congresses, sector-specific conferences and high-yield incentive programmes that deliver long-term economic value.”

Integrated Ecosystem Representation

The KwaZulu-Natal stand will host a mix of public entities, destination organisations, accommodation establishments and supported SMMEs.

Participating entities include:

  • KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority
  • Peermont Metcourt Umfolozi Hotel
  • Cathedral Peak Hotel
  • South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise
  • Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife
  • Syavaya Travel
  • KZN Sharks Board
  • Umhlathuze Municipality
  • Enterprise iLembe (SMME)
  • Magaga Media Communications (SMME)

Enterprise iLembe and Magaga Media Communications participate under the Durban KZN Convention Bureau’s enterprise development framework, ensuring emerging enterprises access international buyers and commercial networks.

“We are presenting a unified provincial value chain,” Gumbi said. “Municipal leadership, conservation authorities, hospitality operators and SMMEs are aligned under a single strategy. That cohesion strengthens our competitive position.”

Infrastructure Strength and Market Position

KwaZulu-Natal’s positioning reinforces convention-scale infrastructure anchored by Durban, strong air connectivity and venue capacity extending into the Midlands, Drakensberg, South Coast and northern corridors.

South Africa’s business events sector contributes approximately R120 billion annually to the national economy. KwaZulu-Natal is positioning to secure a greater proportion of that high-value segment.

“We are infrastructure-capable and market-ready,” Gumbi said. “From large congress venues to regionally differentiated meeting environments, KwaZulu-Natal offers both operational depth and strategic location.”
