KZN on high alert as severe weather hits parts of South Africa.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over the central and eastern parts of the country.

According to the SAWS, severe thunderstorms are expected to affect the western parts of KZN today, with a likelihood of strong winds, lightning and heavy downpours that may lead to localised flooding.

Cogta MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has assured residents that the Provincial Disaster Management Centre is working closely with all relevant stakeholders — including municipalities, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL), and provincial departments — to ensure that adequate measures are in place to respond swiftly to any incidents that may arise, especially on major routes.

“We are in constant communication with all disaster management teams across the province to ensure readiness and rapid response. Our priority is the safety of all residents, and we urge communities to remain vigilant, particularly those in low-lying areas that are prone to flooding,” said Buthelezi.
Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when travelling, especially at night, and to avoid crossing low-lying bridges and flooded roads.
Motorists are also urged to reduce speed and maintain a safe following distance during adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile Gauteng will see showers and thundershowers throughout the weekend, with temperatures slightly cooler.

Sunday will bring continued thundershowers, with temperatures rising to 28°C. A 30% chance of rain is forecast, with moderate winds coming from the northeast.

The weather service said that more rain is expected in the coming weeks as seasonal weather patterns shift, bringing some relief from the current hot and dry conditions across Gauteng.
