The first opening ceremony took place at Mexico City Stadium (also known as Estadio Azteca) in Mexico City ahead of the host’s opener against South Africa on 11 June, themed around papel picado and folkloric performance.
Colombian star Shakira and Nigerian Burna Boy performed “Dai Dai”, the official song of the tournament, bringing roars from the crowd.
Performers wore indigenous clothing, while others were dressed in all gold and held giant golden footballs above their heads.

Toronto follows on 12 June, ahead of Canada’s first-ever home World Cup match, with a “cultural mosaic” theme. Los Angeles hosts the third ceremony later that day, before the United States face Paraguay.
All three are produced by Marco Balich, the creative director behind several Olympic Opening Ceremonies.
“The FIFA World Cup is a moment the world shares, and that begins with how we open it,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
“Starting with Mexico City and continuing next days with Toronto and Los Angeles, these ceremonies will bring together music, culture and football in a way that reflects both the individuality of each nation and the unity that defines this tournament. It is a powerful way to begin a truly global celebration.”
Authorities have declared June 11 a public holiday in Mexico City, with schools closed and employers encouraged to allow remote work. Access to the stadium area is restricted to ticket holders, accredited media and authorised personnel.

Opera superstar Andrea Bocelli and K-Pop Demon Hunters singer Ejae performed the tournament’s official anthem DNA, which was officially released on Wednesday.
Mexican singer Fernández, who is the son of veteran crooner Vicente Fernández, sang the Mexican national anthem in unison with many of the 80,000 fans.
Grammy-winning South African star Tyla performed her nation’s anthem.
Tyla, whose hits include the song Water and the Fifa song Game Time, will return to the World Cup stage on Friday to take part in the US opening ceremony in Los Angeles alongside Katy Perry, Future, Lisa and Anitta.
FIFA has tapped a bevy of global artists for the ceremonies, several of whom are featured on the 18-song Official Fifa World Cup 2026 Album.
