Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has reshuffled his cabinet, saying the move was aimed at strengthening governance in a legislature made up of 80 seats in total.
Lesufi confirmed that the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has now joined the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), expanding the coalition government.
The EFF becomes the fifth party in the GPU, alongside the ANC, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Patriotic Alliance (PA), and Rise Mzansi.
Lesufi said the reshuffle was approved by national African National Congress (ANC) structures.
This sees Nkululeko Dunga, the EFF Gauteng leader, appointed as the MEC for Finance.
Education MEC Matome Chiloane making way for Lebogang Maile, who led the finance department.
Addressing Chiloane’s removal, Lesufi said the decision was not performance-related.
“I must be honest, I’m hurt with Chiloane. He’s done nothing wrong… it has been a difficult decision,” he said, adding that alternative responsibilities would be considered for him.
More changes to the executive included the redeployment of Nomantu-Nkomo Ralehoko from her role in health and wellness to social development. Faith Mazibuko will now assume responsibility for the health portfolio.
Gauteng’s new executive is as follows:
- e-Government: Bonginkosi Dlamini (IFP)
- Education and Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation: Lebogang Maile (ANC)
- Transport, Roads and Logistics: Kedibone Diale-Tlabela
- Economic Development and Agriculture and Rural Development: Vuyiswa Ramokgopa
- Finance: Nkululeko Dunga 6. Health and Wellness: Faith Mazibuko
- Human Settlements: Tasneem Motara
- Environment: Ewan Botha
- Infrastructure Development and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs: Jacob Mamabolo
- Department of Social Development: Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko
In a further twist, the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has also agreed in principle to join the GPU, although discussions are still ongoing.
“The decision to bring these political parties was facilitated by our national leadership,” Lesufi said.
Lesufi highlighted priorities including economic growth, crime reduction and social support, noting a food distribution programme reaching over 400,000 residents and the deployment of SANDF troops to crime hotspots.
