Livestream: Day 5 of the hearings into public protector impeachment.

By Lehlohonolo Lehana.

There has been another attempt to drag President Cyril Ramaphosa into Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s impeachment – a process which her counsel, advocate Dali Mpofu SC, warned could last much longer than the Section 194 committee anticipated.

Mpofu accused Ramaphosa that he made certain accusations against the public protector, saying she’s guilty of perjury and all sorts of things, which would be impeachable if they’re true.

Ramaphosa’s lawyer has rubbished Mkhwebane’s claims she did not deliberately change the law to find him guilty of lying to Parliament – and insists she should face another perjury investigation.

Mkhwebane is currently facing two perjury charges for allegedly lying under oath in her disastrous efforts to defend her investigation into the SA Reserve Bank.

Those charges are linked to her failure to disclose meetings she had with former president Jacob Zuma about a report in which she unlawfully sought to change the mandate of the central bank so that it was no longer focused on protecting the value of the rand.
