Day 2 of the section 194 inquiry into Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office has just kicked off – with the evidence of constitutional expert witness Hassen Ebrahim.
Constitutional expert Ebrahim, will testify on constitutional framework in which the Public Protector operates. He is the first witness in the proceedings.
Meanwhile taxpayers paid R3.7 million for suspended Mkhwebane to live alongside ministers in the government’s Bryntirion Estate in Pretoria, while she owned her own house in the capital city.
All of this was done in the name of “security risks” after a threats assessment was performed by former police chief General Khehla Sitole when he was divisional commissioner for protection and security services in 2017. Sitole’s recommendation to move Mkhwebane into Bryntirion was approved by then public works minister Nathi Nhleko.
