The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in South Africa (SA) will resume its proceedings on Monday, January 26, the commission confirmed in a statement.
The Commission will continue where it left off in December 2025, hearing evidence from persons who have been implicated in the serious allegations made by Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and many other witnesses who corroborated or substantiated those allegations last year.
Chaired by Justice Mandisa Madlanga, the commission is investigating allegations of corruption, political interference, and criminal misconduct within SA’s justice system.
In a statement on Monday, the commission said that Phase 2 provides persons implicated in Phase 1 an opportunity to respond to the allegations made against them and, where applicable, to make their own allegations.
Phase Three will provide for the recall of Mkhwanazi and the witnesses supporting his allegations.
“In this phase, the earlier evidence of the lieutenant-general and supporting witnesses will be subjected to testing questioning, and they will have the opportunity to reply to any evidence adduced against them in Phase 2, “the commission said.
The commission has heard from a number of witnesses, including Minister Senzo Mchunu who is on special leave, and who is alleged to have issued a directive to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), set up in 2018, to shield politically connected members of a criminal syndicate from prosecution.
Mchunu said that his 31 December 2024 directive to disband the unit was driven by his view that the unit had become “administratively untenable”. He claimed this assessment was reinforced by numerous complaints of human rights abuses submitted to him by civil society actors, whistleblowers, SAPS members, members of Parliament and members of the public.
The commission delivered its interim report to President Cyril Ramaphosa on 17 December 2025, three months after the first hearing took place on 17 September 2025.
