The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says his party will remove the African National Congress (ANC) from power in the Eastern Cape.
Malema was addressing the ground forces gathered at the Orient Theatre in East London.
He said the province is a stronghold of the ANC and should it be removed in the province it will not have an outright majority after next year’s elections.
“The survival of the ANC depends on the Eastern Cape. Everywhere else the ANC is failing dismally except in the Eastern Cape. That’s why in the Eastern Cape a double effort must be put in place so that the ANC fails and when it fails it fails the whole of South Africa,” added Malema.
Malema said that the Eastern Cape remains underdeveloped due to a lack of proper leadership.
“Eastern Cape can be turned into the Agricultural Hub of South Africa, where we put water and give our people the seeds and the tools to work the land.”
Meawhile the party believes its historic by-election victory in Saldanha Bay will lay the foundation for more success in the future.
The IEC confirmed the EFF’s victory on Thursday – it’s the first time the political party has won an election in the Western Cape after voting commenced on Wednesday.
The by-election follows the murder of the previous councillor, Arthur Gqeba, who was killed in Vredenburg in September.
EFF member Mthobeli Twala emerged victorious as the new councillor for ward nine after contesting with the ANC’s Zuko Mpika.
