Manchester United beat Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after their FA Cup tie finished 1-1 following extra time with Kai Havertz missing in the shootout to send 10-man United into the fourth round.

After an underwhelming first half, United took the lead in the 52nd minute through Bruno Fernandes’ curling effort from just inside the box after a great run by Alejandro Garnacho.

The game turned on its head 10 minutes later though, as United’s Diogo Dalot – already booked for a wild challenge on Myles Lewis-Skelly – received a second yellow card for a reckless tackle on Mikel Merino.

Two minutes later, Bayindir’s poor attempted punch fell at the feet of Gabriel, whose shot took a wicked deflection off Matthijs de Ligt and in to put the Gunners in charge of the tie.

Arsenal could have completed the comeback when they were awarded a questionable penalty after Havertz went down under minimal contact from Harry Maguire.

But Bayindir produced a superb save from Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, before the Gunners spurned several chances to score a winner.

United will now face an immediate reunion with Ruud van Nistelrooy, as the holders host Leicester City.

Van Nistelrooy was an assistant to Erik ten Hag and served as interim boss, overseeing two wins over Leicester before Ruben Amorim took charge, and then taking the top job with the Foxes.

Elsewhere in the fourth round, Plymouth Argyle’s reward for knocking out Brentford will be a home match against Liverpool, while Aston Villa host Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton meet Chelsea and David Moyes’ Everton play Bournemouth in all-Premier League ties.

League One leaders Birmingham will welcome Newcastle United, Exeter City play Nottingham Forest and Manchester City will visit Leyton Orient or Derby Country, who meet in a rescheduled tie on Tuesday night.

Doncaster Rovers, who are the lowest ranked team left in the competition, will play Crystal Palace. The fixtures will be played on the weekend of 8 February.
