Liverpool remain unbeaten in the Premier League this season after Sadio Mane scored his 100th goal for the club in a victory against Crystal Palace.
Jurgen Klopp’s side created numerous chances against a resilient Palace before Mane pounced on a rebound at the back post in the first half.
Liverpool were wasteful in the first half as Diogo Jota fired over the bar from a few yards out in a glorious opportunity, while Thiago and Jordan Henderson were also denied by keeper Vicente Guaita.
Palace had started brightly – hitting the post twice in as many minutes as Liverpool failed to clear their lines in the box – but Liverpool’s persistence eventually paid off.
In the end it was a comfortable victory that capped a good week for Liverpool at Anfield, following their dramatic 3-2 win over AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday.
And it means Liverpool go top of the table for at least a few hours on Saturday with four wins from their opening five games, while visitors Palace remain outside the top 10.
Meanwhile Martin Odegaard’s sweetly struck free-kick earned Arsenal their second Premier League win of the season at the expense of Burnley, whose search for a first league victory of the campaign continues.
Odegaard curled home from the edge of the penalty area after Ashley Westwood had clipped Bukayo Saka’s heels.
Referee Anthony Taylor awarded Burnley a second-half penalty for a foul by Aaron Ramsdale on Matej Vydra, but overturned the decision after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor.
The Clarets’ best chance of the game fell to debutant Maxwel Cornet, whose close-range effort was palmed over the crossbar by Ramsdale.
Elsewhere Manchester City needed the help of VAR to save them from a home defeat to Southampton in a game which finished 0-0.
Southampton started the game well and had the Premier League champions on the back foot in the opening exchanges, but struggled to create anything of note.
It was a frustrating first 45 minutes for City, who had eight shots but failed to test Alex Mccarthy in the Southampton goal.
The first real drama of the game came just after the hour. Referee Jon Moss pointed to the penalty spot for a foul by Kyle Walker on Adam Armstrong, with the City defender sent off. But the VAR, Martin Atkinson, advised Moss to review his decision and after visiting the monitor he cancelled the red card and the spot kick.
City finished with 16 shots, with just the single effort on target.
