The suspended Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu has handed over his electronic devices to investigators at the SA Police Service (SAPS).
Mchunu’s spokesperson, Sthembiso Mshengu, confirmed to Fullview that Mchunu handed his devices to the police.
Mshengu was appointed this week as Mchunu’s spokesperson to manage media enquiries pertaining to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Mchunu was placed on special leave after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, accused him of interfering in high-profile criminal investigations to protect individuals linked to crime syndicates and senior police officials.
Mchunu reiterated his full cooperation with all processes and reaffirmed his commitment to “transparency, accountability, and respect” for the rule of law.
He maintained that he had “nothing to hide” and that he welcomed any lawful investigation.
Last month, during his appearance at the Parliament Ad-Hoc Committee investigating allegations made by Mkhwanazi, Mchunu defended his decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) in KwaZulu-Natal, informing the committee that he had the approval of president Cyril Ramaphosa to proceed with the decision.
Mchunu remains Member of Parliament (MP) and while aiming to potentially return to his position as minister (and stay out of jail).
Mchunu’s party, the African National Congress (ANC), also finds itself in a tricky position. It’ll probably want to show it is holding Mchunu accountable, while avoiding standing as “accused number one” in the matter.
