On 1st February 2025, fans convened at the Sun Bet Arena in Pretoria for a night to remember, as Mike + The Mechanics commenced their highly anticipated “Looking Back – Living The Years 2025 Tour” in South Africa. With a setlist that artfully combined timeless classics with fresh sounds, the concert provided an emotional journey for long-standing fans while also welcoming new listeners into the fold.
The evening began with South African rock legends Arno Carstens and Albert Frost, whose set seemed to be curbed when the main act took to the stage 15 minutes early. As the lights dimmed, the enthusiastic audience erupted into cheers, perfectly setting the tone for the night. The band opened with “Get Up,” a punchy anthem from their 1991 album Word of Mouth. Vocalists Tim Howar and Andrew Roachford immediately captivated the crowd, their harmonies resonating beautifully amid their lively stage presence. Howar, renowned for his theatrical flair, expertly navigated the audience’s energy, engaging even the most reluctant listeners.
The selection of early hits continued with “A Beggar on a Beach of Gold,” a sentimental favourite for many. The evening felt like a nostalgic stroll, rekindling cherished memories through familiar melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Roachford’s soulful contributions enriched the performance, showcasing his vocal prowess while exemplifying the band’s collaborative spirit.
Mike Rutherford, the co-founder and enduring heart of Mike + The Mechanics, commanded the stage with effortless charisma. Alongside his bandmates—Nic Collins on drums, Anthony Drennan on guitar, and Luke Juby on keyboards—the ensemble delivered each song with precision and palpable enthusiasm. The audience responded warmly, sharing in the excitement as the fan favourite “Another Cup of Coffee” led to a delightful moment of collective sing-along early in the set.

The band introduced newer songs like “Try to Save Me,” met with warm applause that emphasised fans’ openness to their ongoing musical journey. This willingness to innovate complemented their beloved classics, creating an enriching experience.
As promised, the night included a sprinkling of Genesis hits, a noteworthy facet of the band’s legacy. “Jesus He Knows Me” was introduced by Howar with a humorous anecdote about its controversial themes, evoking laughter and nostalgia, while showcasing Rutherford’s ability to navigate his past even as he propels his current project forward.
Halfway through the show, the atmosphere shifted dramatically when the band transitioned to an acoustic medley segment. This intimate setting featured pared-down renditions of beloved songs such as “Follow You Follow Me”, “Everybody Gets A Second Chance” and “Invisible Touch,” allowing the audience to appreciate the intricate arrangements and lyrical storytelling central to their artistry.
Returning to a full electric set, the energy surged again with “I Can’t Dance,” augmented by Howar’s signature dance moves that drew cheers from the crowd. The electrifying atmosphere remained as Roachford lit up the stage with a stunning performance of his hit “Cuddly Toy,” reminding all present of his immense talent and the joy of live music.
Howar and Roachford shone brightly in their vocal duties, with Roachford’s powerful voice elevating the emotional gravitas of classics like “The Living Years.” His heartfelt rendition enveloped the audience in a hush, while many reached for their phones to capture the moment. It was a scene where music transcended time, reuniting attendees with their memories and emotions, exemplifying the true power of the collective experience that live music provides.
