The Mining Qualifications Authority’s 2026 Mining Skills Lekgotla, held February 26–27 at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, was more than a milestone celebration, it was a deliberate, forward-looking gathering that brought together delegates from government, industry, labour, academia, and communities to confront a pivotal question: How can South Africa’s mining sector, a longstanding economic backbone, reinvent itself for the demands of the 21st century without leaving its people behind?
Marking the MQA’s 30th anniversary since its establishment in 1996 as a Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA), the event unfolded under the resonant theme “30 Years of Skills Development Excellence – Mining Future Skills for Empowerment – Together”.
What began in the post-apartheid era as a response to mine safety crises and exclusion has evolved into a robust ecosystem that has supported more than 800 000 learners through adult education, artisan training, bursaries, internships, learnerships, and safety programmes. These efforts have tangibly improved safety records, boosted productivity, and opened doors for women, youth, and previously disadvantaged communities in an industry once defined by stark inequalities.
Yet the Lekgotla did not dwell solely on the past. Delegates confronted urgent realities: the accelerating shift toward automation and digitalisation, the global race for critical minerals essential to batteries, renewable energy, and electric vehicles, and the just energy transition that demands rapid reskilling.
Discussions ranged from AI-driven exploration tools and predictive maintenance systems to drone inspections that reduce human exposure to risk, and collision-avoidance technologies that integrate seamlessly with production management.
A powerful undercurrent was the link between research, innovation, and economic competitiveness. Presenters pointed to global evidence: nations producing large numbers of PhDs tend to generate stronger research outputs and higher rates of innovation.
South Africa’s own position, lagging behind leaders like the United States and China but comparable to several mining peers, underscored the need to strengthen the research-to-innovation pipeline. The mineral exploration value chain itself was dissected: a 10–25-year journey from discovery to bankable feasibility, heavily dependent on high-quality geoscience data, sustained investment, and sophisticated risk management.
Global demand trends added urgency. Exploration budgets for battery metals (nickel, lithium, cobalt) have surged since 2010, driven by clean energy transitions, electrification, and geopolitical competition. Projections from the International Energy Agency indicate that lithium demand could grow fivefold by 2040, with graphite and nickel doubling and cobalt and rare-earth elements rising by 50–60%. South Africa, with substantial reserves of manganese, platinum-group metals, vanadium, copper, and emerging lithium prospects (notably in the Northern Cape), stands at a crossroads: the ability to map, extract, process, and beneficiate these minerals sustainably will shape its role in the global supply chain and support the country’s own just energy transition goals.
At the same time, the Lekgotla directly addressed a critical risk that many mining leaders worldwide are only beginning to confront: the potential for rapid AI adoption and organisational flattening to erode the leadership pipeline. Delegates acknowledged the efficiency gains of automation, reduced cost bases, faster decision-making, less bureaucracy, but also examined the “hollow middle” effect that can follow when tactical supervision migrates to digital systems and intermediate supervisory roles shrink.
The MQA emphasised that technology must never become a substitute for human judgement, relational coherence, or developmental depth. Presenters stressed the need to protect the traditional apprenticeship ladder; graduate to supervisor to middle manager to executive, by deliberately designing lateral career paths, formal recognition of developmental roles, and structured opportunities for emerging leaders to practise people management, interpret ambiguity, and carry organisational culture. Without these bridges, high-potential talent may conclude that upward mobility is narrowing, weakening long-term succession and cultural stability.
Ethical considerations ran through every session. Technology must be fail-safe to protect lives above all else. It should not trigger widespread job losses. Reskilling pathways must be deliberate and accessible. Inclusion remains non-negotiable: bridging the digital divide, ensuring equitable participation across race, sex, age, language, and culture, and developing homegrown solutions to avoid imported biases.
The Lekgotla closed on a note of resolve. Stakeholders recommitted to harmonising relationships between funders and research institutions, balancing knowledge creation with practical, value-adding outcomes. As one recurring message put it: research sparks discovery; innovation turns it into lasting impact.
Three decades on, the MQA is no longer just training workers; it is helping shape an industry that is safer, more inclusive, technologically advanced, and globally competitive. In a world hungry for the minerals beneath South African soil, the real resource being mined at Gallagher Estate was something even more valuable: a shared vision for the future.
With mining still contributing around 5.8–6.1% to GDP (R439–R442 billion in recent estimates) and employing nearly 470,000 people directly, the sector’s evolution remains central to South Africa’s economic resilience and its place in the global energy transition. The MQA’s message was clear: Technology will not break mining, neglecting the human and leadership bridge between strategy and execution might.
