SA Police Services (SAPS) confirmed the discovery of 59-year-old businessman remains, who went missing trying to cross Komati River, Komatipoort in Mpumalanga.
The discovery follows a week-long search for a missing businessman.
SA Police Services (SAPS) Provincial Spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo says according to officials, search teams identified a crocodile in the river suspected of being linked to the disappearance.
After obtaining the necessary permissions, the animal was euthanized.
Masondo says during examination, human remains were discovered inside the crocodile’s intestines and subsequently retrieved.
He says authorities have confirmed that DNA testing will be conducted to determine whether the remains belong to the missing businessman.
The investigation remains ongoing pending the outcome of DNA results.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the search teams for their dedication and bravery in difficult and dangerous conditions.
“I give honour to the dedicated team that has put their lives in danger to find the missing person. I know it was not easy, but they did not give up, even when faced with a dangerous situation,” said Mkhwanazi.
