Oupa Brown Mogotsi has been arrested following his appearance at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry at the Bridgette Mabandla Justice College in Tshwane.
Mogotsi faces charges of defeating the ends of justice, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition and discharging a firearm.
Without naming the suspect, SA Police Service (SAPS) confirmed in a statement that the multidisciplinary team has executed a J50 warrant of arrest and arrested a suspect for defeating the ends of justice.
The case relates to an incident in early November 2025 in Vosloorus, East of Johannesburg, when Mogotsi made headlines claiming there has been an attempt to take his life. He had said at the time that the vehicle he had been travelling in had been struck by multiple rounds of gunfire from unknown suspects.
However, police investigations has uncovered that the assassination attempt incident was hoax.
SA Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said, the arrest emanated from staging of an attempted assassination on the suspect’s life in Vosloorus.
Mathe said investigations have now linked the gun used in that incident to other crimes.
“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the firearm used in the commission of the crime has also been linked to other serious and violent crimes, including cases of murder and attempted murder, said Mathe.
Mogotsi is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on May 18, 2026.
Mogotsi claimed to be an agent of the state tasked with uncovering crime intelligence information and said he received basic training in 2020 when he was promoted from being a police informant to contact agent.
