The motion of no confidence against City of Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero by his coalition partners was withdrawn in council meeting on Tuesday.
The motion was submitted by a group of minority parties, including the Al-Jama-ah, United Democratic Movement (UDM), and African Independent Congress (AIC).
They cited a breakdown of governance, administrative instability, and political interference in the city’s operations as the reasons for tabling the motion.
Speaking ahead of the motion, the group emphasised that the aim was to replace the mayor, not to dissolve the coalition, and was part of a broader effort to restore collective leadership that prioritises consultation, transparency, and lawful governance.
Fullview learnt that during a meeting of the council’s Political Management Committee (PMC) on Monday, there was a resolution to withdraw the motion against Morero.
Al Jama-ah’s councillor Kabelo Gwamanda said the mayor had presented proposals deemed sufficient to satisfy the immediate grievances, prompting the withdrawal.
The PMC is a structure composed of leaders of the political parties that form part of the city’s ruling coalition, including the ANC, EFF and Patriotic Alliance.
Morero said that the motion included issues relating to service delivery, which he believed the local government had begun to address. He said his administration had demonstrated over the last two months that there were “signs of recovery and improvement”.
“Both Al Jama-ah and the UDM indicated that they would be withdrawing the motion. However, there were issues they still wanted to discuss in relation to governance and services to communities,” Morero added.
Morero is expected to square off against the city’s Finance MMC and ANC Regional Deputy Secretary Loyiso Masuku for his position as ANC Johannesburg regional chairperson at the three-day regional conference, which starts tomorrow at the Cedarwoods Hotel.
