Former Bafana Bafana, Al Ahly, Mamelodi Sundowns, Supersport United and Al Ahli Jeddah manager Pitso Mosimane was on Wednesday conferred with an honourary doctoral degree by the University of Johannesburg (UJ).
This prestigious honour recognised Mosimane’s outstanding contributions to sports, his exemplary leadership, and his unwavering commitment to social upliftment.
The conferment ceremony took place in front of long list of distinguished guests such as the Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, PSL Chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza, Dr Danny Jordaan, Dr Jomo Sono, UJ Vice-Chancellor, Prof Letlhokwa Mpedi, Executive Dean Health Sciences, Prof Annie Temane and numerous other government and sport executives.
Speaking at the ceremony on Wednesday, Dr Mosimane said being recognised by academics is a humbling experience.
“I am deeply honoured and grateful to the University of Johannesburg for this recognition. I have been, and always will be, a student of our beautiful game. Football is a powerful tool for change, it is a source of hope, and a platform to educate and inspire the next generation. This honourary doctorate is not just a personal achievement, but a result of the hard work and dedication of all the players, coaches, teams, and supporters who have been part of this incredible journey. I have no words, I am truly humbled standing before you today,” said Dr Mosimane.
One of the UJ graduates said sharing the stage with Mosimane was a thrill.
“I really appreciate the opportunity to graduate and actually share the stage with the legendary coach. I did not even know he would be here today, so I am really thrilled.
“I got a chance to see him earlier and shared a little moment with him outside, but I am sure he won’t remember that, but anyways, if he sees this, well done on his achievements, and I wish him the best of luck with his future endeavours.”
The seasoned South African coach is set to celebrate his 60th birthday on Friday.
