Mosimane parts ways with Iranian side Esteghlal FC over unpaid wages.

Renowned South African coach Pitso Mosimane has officially parted ways with Iranian top-flight club Esteghlal FC.

Mosimane’s departure is effective immediately, as he’s cited unresolved salary disputes that have also affected his technical team.

Mosimane’s backroom staff, including Maahier Davids, Musi Matlaba, Kabelo Rangoaga, and Kyle Solomon, were similarly impacted by the club’s financial issues.

In a statement, Mosimane’s management team, MT Sports Marketing & Management, confirmed the decision.

“Despite several opportunities to resolve the matter – beginning with initial discussions with the former CEO of the club last year, followed by a formal default notice issued on 1 January 2025 – Esteghlal FC failed to address the issue,” the statement read.

After the notice, Mosimane and his team extended a 15-day deadline, in line with FIFA regulations, allowing the club’s new CEO and board time to familiarise themselves with the situation. However, the club failed to meet the deadline.

“Coach Pitso Mosimane and his technical team are still owed more than two months’ salaries,” the statement continued.

Under his stewardship, Esteghlal secured a vital AFC Champions League draw against Al Ahli FC in Saudi Arabia – a club Mosimane had previously helped return to the Saudi Pro League.

Domestically, Esteghlal currently sits 11th in the Persian Gulf Pro League standings, having lost just three of their 10 league matches under Mosimane’s guidance. The club has also advanced to the next round of the Iranian Cup.

The statement concluded by confirming that “the appropriate processes will be followed to resolve this matter”.

Meanwhile, Mosimane remains committed to the sport and is exploring new coaching opportunities.

Mosimane left South Africa just over four years ago after spending eight successful years with Mamelodi Sundowns, where he enjoyed a legendary run from 2012 to 2020. His high-profile move to Egyptian giants Al Ahly was well document and he experienced significant success.

It is also worth remembering that Mosimane left Saudi club Al Ahli – his first coaching stint outside of Africa – in 2023 due to unpaid salaries, with the payment dispute leading to a dramatic and acrimonious departure.
